Tender Bamboo Palya

Tender Bamboo shoots are used in cooking in Asian countries. They are very tasty and real delight to eat. Many doesn't know about the recipes of bamboo shoot. Main ingredients for the recipe is tender bamboo shoot and moong dal along with light spices. The recipe of bamboo shoots are one of my favourite. When you get bamboo shoots dont forget to prepare this traditional and very tasty dish. The complete description is provided.

Preparation time: 40 minutes
Servings: 6-8 

Tender Bamboo shoot -500gms
Moong dal/Split green gram -1 cup
Chopped onion -1/2 cup
Chopped green chillies- 4
Curry leaves
Cilantro/Coriander leaves
Pepper powder -1/4tspoon
Mustard seeds -1/4tspoon
Cumin seeds-1/4 tspoon
Turmeric powder -1/4tspoon
Salt as per taste

  1. Remove outer layer from bamboo shoot and clean it.
  2. Chop Bamboo to thin layer coarse pieces and soak it in water overnight.
  3. Transfer them to a pressure cooker, add water and salt.
  4. Let it cook for 3 whistles in Medium flame
  5. When the pressure subsides, drain the water from bamboo shoot coarse pieces.
  6. Moong dal along with some quantity of water is cooked in a pressure cooker.
  7. Take a Pan, add oil, when oil is hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds.
  8. Add chopped Turmeric powder,green chillies, onion and stir until onion turns transparent.
  9. Add boiled bamboo shoot pieces, pepper powder and moong dal , Mix well.
  10. Cook for 8 minutes, garnish with cilantro.
  11. Bamboo shoot palya is ready to serve.
