Avarekaalu Uppusaaru

Avarekaalu or val papdi is the main ingredient in the recipe. Avarekaalu uppusaaru is a karnataka traditional recipe served with Ragi mudde. The taste will be so nice that we start drinking the saaru a lot. It is also a good combination for rice. Southern karnataka people prepare it a lot as of my knowledge. Others can try it is tasty, easy and quick recipe.
Preparation time: 30min
Servings: 6 cups

Avarekaalu- 5 cups
Toor dal -1/2 cup
Green chilli-6
Coriander leaves -1 cup
Tamarind- 3gms
Garlic-4 clove
Salt as per taste

  1. Take avarekaalu,toor dal,green chilli in pressure cooker. Cook it until 3-4 whistles.
  2. Now seperate green chilli, small quantity of toor dal, small quantity of avarekaalu to make spicy chutney.
  3. Spicy chutney for uppsaaru: Take pestle and mortar or can use mixie to grind the chutney. if it is stone pestle and mortar taste will be enhanced. Add boiled green chilli, small quantity of toor dal and avarekaalu, coriander leaves, tamarind and garlic. grind well and make it to coarse paste.
  4. Uppsaaru: The Stew of toor dal and avarekaalu mixed with spicy chutney is known as uppusaaru.
  5. While serving with rice or ragi ball add small quantity of spicy chutney to uppsaaru and mix well.Also add a spoon of ghee and taste will be awesome.
