Blackeye peas curry

Black eye peas curry or Alasande kaalu Saaru is a tasty curry for rice. It is very easy and quick to prepare. The recipe includes black eye peas boiled in a gravy of light spices. we prepare it often in our home, the black eye peas are very healthy lentils.The detail of recipe is described below.
Preparation time: 15 min

Boiled Black eye peas - 1.5 cup
Potato- 1 small chopped like cubes [optional]
Chopped Coriander leaves
Chopped Tomato-1.5
Dried grated coconut - 1/4 cup
Garlic -6
Ginger -1/2 inch
Dry Roasted Peanuts-3 tpoons
Red chilli powder-3 tspoons
Cumin seeds powder-2 tspoon
Turmeric powder-pinch
Garam masala - 2 tspoon
Coriander powder/ dhaniya powder - 1 tspoon
Salt as per taste
Oil- 4 tspoons


  1.  Dry black eye peas is soaked in water for 3 hours and cooked for 2 whistles in pressure cooker, Fresh black eye peas can be boiled in pressure cooker for 1 whistle.
  2. Grind peanuts, coconut, ginger, garlic, tomato, coriander leaves, salt by adding little water make it a thick  paste.
  3. Take a kadai/cooking bowl, add oil. when the oil is hot, add potatoes and boiled black eye peas. Add grind masala, water, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, garam masala and Salt as per taste
  4. Add half of chopped tomato and stir well. Boil it for few minutes by closing the lid so that potatoes get cooked. Black eye peas curry will be ready to serve.
