Chicken Masala maharashtrian style

Chicken Masala -Chicken pieces in a tasty gravy. We have prepare and taste many kind of chicken dishes daily. We go to different places and can enjoy variety of dishes too. Likewise we can also prepae variety of chicken recipes at home using the spices used in different places. Here posting a detailed recipe of chicken masala in maharastrian style which one of friend guided and she also said even it can be called as konkani style of chicken masala. Prepare this tasty recipe at home and enjoy.

Servings: 3

Chicken pieces with bone-1/2kg[ Chicken drumsticks -6pieces]
Oil -1/2tablespoon
Red chilli powder-1tspoon
Turmeric powder -1/4tspoon
Black pepper powder -1/4tspoon
Bay leaves -2
Cardamom powder -2pinch [optional]
Salt as per taste
Lemon juice

For Masala:Roast and grind
Chopped onion -1cup
Dry red chillis -2
Garlic -10cloves
Ginger -1 inch
Fresh grated coconut -1.5cup
Clove -3
Cinnamon -1/2inch
Oil -1/2tablespoon


  1. Take a wok, add 1/2tablespoon oil.when its hot add chopped onion and fry it until golden brown.
  2. Add dry red chillis, garlic, ginger,clove & cinnamon. Keep stirring for 5 more minutes and now add  grated coconut. Mix well and keep stirring until coconut become golden color.
  3. Cool the above mixture and grind it adding little quantity of water.
  4. To a pan, add 1/2tablespoon of oil, 3tspoons of Chopped onion, 2 bay leaves , chicken pieces.Close the lid and cook well. Keep stirring in between.
  5. Once the chicken is cooked well, Add turmeric powder and 1 tspoon redchilli powder and salt.
  6. After 6-8 minutes add grinded masala. Add 1tspoon of red chilli powder if required, black pepper powder and cardamom powder. Add small quantity of water. Close the lid and cook well.
  7. Make desired consistency of gravy. Garnish with lemon juice and cilantro. chicken masala gravy is ready to serve.
