Idli

Idli is a traditional and famous  breakfast of south india. It is prepared using rice,  idly rava or rava and urad dal as such. The batter is prepared after soaking urad dal and idli rava and fermented, Fermentation breaks the starch and becomes easy for metabolism. chutney and sambar is the famous combination with idli and it will be a very very tasty breakfast. Preparation time: After fermentation just 12min
Servings: around 20-24 idlis

Ingredients:
Baking soda-1/4tspoon
Salt as per taste
Idly Rava- 250gms [washed and Soaked in water for 5-6hours]
Urad dal -125gms [washed and Soaked in water for 5-6hours]

Method:

  1. Remove the water from idly rava[No need to grind it]. Grind only urad dal to get smooth paste. Mix both. Keep it in warm place to get fermented. [Dont add salt and baking soda at this point]
  2. After fermentation you can notice the batter has raised up. Add baking soda and salt a small amount, Mix well. 
  3. Pour the batter in idly maker and steam cook for around 12min or until cooked well and soft idly will be ready. Just prick a fork and check- the idli is cooked well if the batter wont stick to the fork.
  4. Remove the idlis and serve them with sambar and chutney. Please check the variety of chutney and curries recipes from categories of the page.
