Banana Blossom Palya

Banana Blossom is a very healthy one and it has lot of nutrients with rich sources of vitamins and minerals. Banana blossom has lot of health benefits  like curing infections, overcoming diabetes and anemia, anti-aging as of my memory from some article from internet. It has different method of preparation which everyone doesn't know and for sure many would have not even eaten it once. Try this healthy banana blossom recipe, This is one my favorite.One banana blossom will be sufficient for 4 servings

Preparation Time: 

  • Cleaning of blossom 1hr
  • Cooking 30 min


Banana blossom  -450gms [ I purchased a whole banana blossom weighing 1pound]
Turmeric powder
Ginger  paste- 1/8 tspoon
chopped Green chilli -2
Chopped Onion-1cup
Grated coconut -2tablespoon
Red chilli powder - 1/4tspoon
Salt to taste
Coconut Oil -1tablespoon
Mustard -1/4tspoon
Jeera -1/4tspoon
Curry leaves

For cleaning banana blossom:
very Light butter milk -500 ml [1/8 glass of curd added to 500 ml of water]

Salt -1/2tspoon


  1. Cleaning of banana blossom:Keep butter milk with salt ready in a bowl. This avoids the discoloration of chopped banana blossom/flowers.Remove the flowers from banana blossom and from the flower remove and throw the parts [stamen and leafy part]  that is mentioned in the image.Use only remaining flowers.Hold the flower together and chop it finely and put into the buttermilk bowl. wash it properly with water again.
  2. Washed banana blossom is taken a bowl , add more amount of water, 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder and 1/2 tsp of salt- Close the lid , let it boil for around 20 minutes. Filter the boiled water and separate the chopped banana flowers.
  3. Again add water and salt to the chopped banana flowers and boil again and filter the water and separate banana blossom flowers.
  4. This is done to remove the bitter taste of banana flower as much as possible. remove the extra amount of water absorbed by the chopped banana flower by squeezing it.
  5. Take a pan, add coconut oil, mustard, Cumin seeds, curry leaves,green chilli, chopped onion, turmeric powder, ginger paste  and mix well
  6. Add the chopped banana flower, grated coconut, salt, red chilli powder and stir often and let it cook for 15 min.
